Prep for Pregnancy- Pre-conception

Most couples will come to a point in their relationship when they are ready to start trying for a baby. You have been through your 20’s, maybe a university degree. You have partied, eaten poorly, perhaps travelled. You may have been on birth control for a while. Your exercise regime is not what is was. Maybe you are asking yourself, is my body ready to have a baby? If you are wondering how you can actually gauge that you may be surprised to know that there is actually a few ways.

1. Check in with your body. Our bodies are intelligent machines that are constantly communicating with us. How are you sleeping? How is your mood? How is your blood sugar? Are you getting huge blood sugar lows and getting the hangrys? Is your period regular? Is your sex drive healthy? All of these symptoms as well as many, many more can give us great insight into how well our body is functioning right now. If you start to make health changes, the first thing you can do is check to see if these symptoms are changing.
2. Basal body temperature. You can measure this yourself with an everyday thermometer, first thing in the morning before you get out of bed. This indicates what temperature your body is when at rest and gives an idea of how your metabolism is operating. You can also track ovulation with temperature and early pregnancy, so having a baseline of your own temperature can help once you are ready to start trying. The following is an indication of normal basal body temperatures;
• Follicular phase (before ovulation): Around 36.1°C – 36.6°C
• Luteal phase (after ovulation): Around 36.7°C – 37.2°C due to progesterone rise
• During pregnancy: BBT may stay elevated above 36.7°C
3. Hair Test Mineral Analysis (HTMA). A simple test that gives so much information on the reserves of the body for pregnancy. HTMA can tell you what heavy metal load your body has, the status of your stress levels, iron status which is very important for pregnancy, mineral reserves and nutrient deficiencies.
